Norwegian Embassy in London

Ambasciata w Norwegia w London, Wielka Brytania

Panoramica

Belgrave Square is the largest of the great Belgravia squares laid out by Thomas Cubitt in the 1820s — and home to one of London's densest concentrations of foreign embassies. The Royal Norwegian Embassy at number 25 has occupied the same address for decades and serves as the operational anchor for one of Norway's most consequential bilateral relationships outside the EEA Agreement framework. The relationship is broad and dense: the United Kingdom hosts an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 Norwegian residents (concentrated in London, the south coast, and the Aberdeen oil-and-gas cluster), is Norway's third-largest single trading partner (anchored by piped-gas and oil exports to UK demand), and shares with Norway a deep North Sea security and energy file, NATO alliance membership and substantial shared interests in the North Atlantic. The Ambassador since August 2023 is Tore Hattrem. The embassy is concurrently accredited to thirteen British overseas territories — Anguilla, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, the Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Montserrat, Pitcairn, Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands, the Sovereign Base Areas on Cyprus, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Servizi Visto

Norwegian residence-permit applications (work permits, skilled-worker permits, study permits at Norwegian universities, family reunification with Norwegian residents, ICT inter-company transfer) are processed for applicants in the United Kingdom — UDI (the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration) online filing via udi.no with biometrics taken at the embassy. Schengen short-stay visas (Type C) for travel to Norway are issued to third-country nationals resident in the UK on long-stay visas who do not benefit from Schengen visa-free travel — a substantial population including Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Nigerian, South African, Chinese, Vietnamese and Filipino UK residents. British passport-holders do not need a visa for short-stay travel to Norway under the EEA visa-waiver arrangement that applies to UK nationals post-Brexit.

Servizi Consolari

The consular section serves the Norwegian national community in the United Kingdom — passport renewal (biometric and ordinary), Personnummer support for Norwegians abroad, paternity registration (a specific Norwegian-citizenship requirement for births abroad), civil-status notification to the Folkeregister (the Norwegian National Population Register held by Skatteetaten), voter registration for Norwegian parliamentary elections, notarial certifications, certified translations into Norwegian, BankID and digital-identity support for citizens abroad, and assistance in detention, hospitalisation, repatriation or bereavement. The Norwegian community in the UK is concentrated in London (the historic Norwegian Church in Rotherhithe and the southwest London Norwegian population centres dating from the wartime years), the Aberdeen oil-and-gas hub (the largest single Norwegian professional community outside Norway, tied to the North Sea energy industry), and the south-coast maritime cluster.

Supporto Commerciale ed Esportazione

Sweden-UK bilateral trade is anchored by the energy file. Norway is one of the United Kingdom's largest single suppliers of natural gas, the source of around a third of UK gas demand under the long-running Norwegian-UK pipeline interconnects (Langeled, Vesterled, FLAGS and others). Norwegian crude-oil exports to UK refineries and the substantial flow of Norwegian fish (salmon, cod and pelagic) into the UK retail and processing market are the other major export categories. UK exports to Norway are dominated by services (financial services, professional and consulting services, engineering services into the Norwegian offshore industry), manufactured goods and pharmaceuticals. The embassy's economic section coordinates with Innovation Norway's London office, the British-Norwegian Chamber of Commerce, the Norwegian-British Energy Partnership (a joint platform on the offshore-wind, hydrogen and CCS energy transition), and the major Norwegian energy and shipping firms with London representation.

Opportunità di Investimento

Investment promotion is anchored by Norway's substantial sovereign-wealth presence in UK assets (the Government Pension Fund Global has one of its largest single-country equity and real-estate exposures in the United Kingdom, managed through Norges Bank Investment Management's London office at the heart of the City), by Equinor's substantial UK operations (oil and gas, offshore wind including the Dogger Bank consortium that is one of the world's largest single offshore-wind projects), and by a continuing flow of Norwegian shipping, offshore-services and energy-transition firms into the UK. The embassy supports Innovation Norway's London operations and the bilateral interface around the post-Brexit Norwegian-UK Free Trade Agreement framework.

Programmi Culturali ed Educativi

Cultural and educational programming runs through the Norwegian Church in London (Sjømannskirken Rotherhithe — a centre of Norwegian community life in London since the late nineteenth century, originally founded as a seamen's church for Norwegian sailors in the Port of London), the Anglo-Norse Society (founded 1918), NORLA (Norwegian Literature Abroad) translation grants supporting UK publications of Norwegian fiction, and the Norwegian musical and theatrical programming at major London venues including the Royal Festival Hall and the BFI. Educational mobility runs through Erasmus+ between Norwegian universities (UiO, NTNU, UiB, UiT) and UK Russell Group institutions, the post-Brexit Turing Scheme replacing Erasmus for UK students, and direct Norwegian-UK research-cooperation agreements. The embassy hosts the annual Norwegian Constitution Day reception on 17 May.

Area di Servizio

The embassy's consular jurisdiction covers the United Kingdom — England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland — together with thirteen British overseas territories listed above. A Consulate-General in Edinburgh covers Scotland; Honorary Consulates extend Norway's reach into the major UK regional centres.

Note Speciali

25 Belgrave Square sits on the south side of Belgrave Square in the heart of the Belgravia diplomatic quarter — a few minutes' walk from Hyde Park Corner (Piccadilly line), Victoria (Victoria, District and Circle lines), and Knightsbridge (Piccadilly line). The square is dense with diplomatic missions and is patrolled by the Metropolitan Police Diplomatic Protection Group. The Norwegian Church (Sjømannskirken) in Rotherhithe — a few miles southeast in the historic Surrey Docks area — has been the centre of Norwegian community life in London since 1872 and is the venue for the major Norwegian community events, the Christmas markets and the National Day commemorations. Norwegian citizens travelling to the United Kingdom do not need consular pre-arrival processing under the post-Brexit EEA visa-waiver arrangement. SAS and Norwegian Air Shuttle operate direct flights from Oslo, Bergen and Stavanger to London Heathrow and Gatwick.
