The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Ottawa manages the bilateral relationship between China and Canada. China is Canada's second-largest trading partner. Canadian exports to China — canola, wheat, pulses, seafood, lumber, minerals, potash and LNG — are essential to Canada's resource-based economy. The Chinese-Canadian community is one of the largest in any Western country, with deep roots in British Columbia and Ontario. The embassy coordinates consulates general in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary.

The consular section oversees visa policy. Most applicants are directed to the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC). The embassy handles diplomatic and official visas directly.

The Cultural Section promotes Chinese culture and language. Confucius Institutes at Canadian universities support Chinese language education. The Chinese-Canadian community's cultural heritage enriches bilateral ties — Chinese New Year celebrations across Canada are among the largest outside Asia.
